Shelters and rescues have dogs of every age, size and breed. If you buy, choose a responsible breeder.
Adopting
- Visit local shelters and breed-specific rescues
- Ask about the dog's history, health and behavior with people and other pets
- Adoption fees often include vaccines, microchipping and spay or neuter
Buying
- Meet the breeder and at least the mother dog
- Ask for health testing results for the parents
- A good breeder asks you questions too and will take the dog back if needed
- Avoid sellers who won't let you visit or always have puppies available
